Why does a horsefly lay its eggs above or around water?

Horseflies lay their eggs on greenery above or near water and when the eggs hatch the larva live in the mud eating other smaller insects until they mature. You can still have horseflies, even if you don't have a pond or a creek or marshy land.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE HORSEFLIES STAY AT NIGHT?
