Do you know how many kinds of horseflies we have in the United States?

There are 350 different kinds of horseflies and there are approximately six, in the west Tennessee area. They come out at different times of the year so it's nonstop for our animals, from late winter thru October. The size of the horseflies can range from 1/4"- 1 1/4" long. Their lifespan is 1-3 years. Their lifespan as an adult is 30-60 days.

 

Did you know the horsefly can pass infectious diseases?

Common diseases include: rabies, salmonella, ringworm, pigeon's fever, as well as parasites the female horsefly leaves on her victim as she feeds.

 

Did you know horseflies can decrease milk production in milk animals?

An animal that is bitten over and over can loose as much as a pint of blood in as little as 3 days. If a milk cow or goat is bitten over and over again their milk production can decrease and hurt the farmers bottom line.

 
 

How many eggs can a Female horsefly lay?

 

A female horsefly will lay as many as 1,000 eggs in one summer. They lay their eggs around and over water, and it doesn't have to be on your property to be a nuisance to you.

Yes, they can cause an animal to lose weight. They can cause extreme annoyance and fatigue in animals.

 Animals need a suitable shelter to allow them to get away from the female horseflies.

Animals will stop eating to swat, roll and stomp the horseflies off of them.
